The regular Falxman performs better in melee than the tier 5 Veteran version, but the Veterans perform better against cav. The main thing that'll reduce shield infantry casualties for any faction is telling your shieldwall to hold fire for the approach. That way, they never lower their shields to throw javs. This is especially important against crossbows which pack quite a punch per shot. Battania has no late-game staying power because fian champions get no protection and are just sitting ducks against sharpshooters, ESPECIALLY in sieges.
