Grade deflation is a problem, and you shouldn’t at all expect to maintain a 4.0 probably even past your second or third semester. This poses problems for med school, where they expect stellar GPAs and you’re completing with those from other prestigious schools such as Stanford which are majorly grade-inflators.Over half the students in a randomly chosen Biology upper division class end up with an A- grade or higher by the end of the semester, and most of the CS courses have GPA averages hovering around 3.4-3.5. I'd even argue that UC Berkeley (another school accused of grade deflation) doesn't really fit that bill. Grades are usually on a curve, so your GPA is a reflection of your ability to perform relative to your peers. I'm a pharm chem major with a 3.8 GPA (also a premed!) and it's not bad.
