I've yet to run across a flaking blue on a 9422, in looking at 100-odd rifles over the past 35 years - so maybe yours was chemically damaged by some solution.The early XTR's were uncheckered, at least on the 9422s. The XTR designation was applied to several models including shotguns and as mentioned above, was supposed to indicate a nicer level of finish on both wood and metal.
