The early 9422 were designed to feed short, long and long rifle cartridges. Initially the 9422 and 9422M receivers differed with the 9422Ms having a longer ejection port than the 9422s. However, Winchester standardized production for the 9422 and both the 9422 and 9422M were made with the same longer ejection port.

I've yet to run across a flaking blue on a 9422, in looking at 100-odd rifles over the past 35 years - so maybe yours was chemically damaged by some solution.The early XTR's were uncheckered, at least on the 9422s. The XTR designation was applied to several models including shotguns and as mentioned above, was supposed to indicate a nicer level of finish on both wood and metal.
